What class is your freight?

Enter each pallet or piece, measured at its widest points with the pallet included. You get the density, the freight class on the 2025 NMFC density scale, and the floor space a carrier will charge for.

Most reclass bills come from a wrong height or a guessed weight. Measure the real thing, round up, and weigh it if you can.

Measuring the height of a shrink-wrapped pallet with a tape measure
  • Density = weight ÷ cubic feet. Higher density, lower class, lower rate.
  • Linear feet shows when a big, light shipment should get a volume quote instead.
  • Commodity check tells you if the class fits what's usual for your product.

Quick guide

Extra charges that surprise shippers

Accessorials are added when the pickup or delivery needs more than a dock-to-dock move. Missing one on the BOL means a bill after delivery.

A driver rolls a pallet off a box truck's liftgate at a curbside delivery

Liftgate

No dock or forklift at the pickup or delivery. The truck lowers the freight to the ground.

Residential

A home or home-based business. Carriers charge more for neighborhood streets and drop-offs.

Limited access

Schools, churches, farms, military bases, construction sites, storage units and similar places.

Inside delivery

The driver brings it past the front door or threshold, not just to the tailgate.

Appointment / notify

The consignee needs a call before delivery or a set time window.

Reweigh & reclass

The carrier measures or weighs the freight and finds it doesn't match the BOL. Then a new bill follows.

Overlength

Pieces longer than about 8 to 12 feet, depending on the carrier. They take extra space and handling.

Hazmat

Hazardous goods need the right UN number, class, packing group and emergency contact on the BOL.

Tools I built for LTL

I learn by building. These are my own desk tools, and the calculator above uses the same density math.

NMFC Class Finder

Handling units in, class out. Switches between the 2025 and pre-2025 density scales, inches or centimeters, and gives the cube, linear feet and a BOL summary to copy.

LTL Desk

Part of my Freight Command Center. It classifies, flags when you're close to a cheaper class, and warns when a shipment is big enough for a volume or partial truckload quote.

Jupiter Somera, remote LTL specialist

About me

Hi, I'm Jupiter Somera.

I'm new to the LTL Specialist title, but not to freight.

I'm a trained US truck dispatcher (Freight Courses 101 Masterclass in freight brokerage, dispatch and freight VA, October 2026; USA Truck Dispatcher Full Course, Udemy, August 2026) and I run my own dispatch service, 8HoursADitch. I got into LTL by building tools for it: freight class, density, linear feet and BOL checks. Now I want to do it every day on a real desk.

Before freight, I spent 12 years in technical support (2000 to 2012), diagnosing problems, supporting clients by phone and keeping job orders organized. That's the same habit an LTL desk needs: find what's wrong before it costs money.

What you get: someone who learns your process fast, double-checks the details and keeps customers updated without being chased.

Questions

LTL basics, answered

What is LTL freight?

Less-than-truckload: shipments too big for parcel but too small to fill a trailer, usually 1 to 6 pallets. You share the truck with other shippers and pay for your part.

What is freight class?

A number from 50 to 500 set by the NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification). It reflects how hard the freight is to move. Dense, sturdy freight gets a low class and a lower rate. Light, bulky or fragile freight gets a high class.

Why did my class change in 2025?

In July 2025 the NMFC moved many commodities to density-based classes and switched to a 13-step density scale. A class you used for years may be different now, so re-check older BOLs.

What's a reclass, and how do I avoid one?

The carrier checks your freight on their own scanner or scale. If the dimensions or weight are off, they bill the new class. Measure at the widest points, include the pallet, round up, and use a real weight.

Are you a freight broker?

No. I don't arrange or sell transportation. I provide LTL support: checks, paperwork, quoting and tracking work for brokers, 3PLs and shippers' own teams.

What are your rates?

It depends on the work: a full-time role, part-time hours, or a set number of shipments. Tell me what you need and I'll send you a clear price.

What hours do you work?

Mon to Fri, 8 AM to 4 PM Central (9 to 5 Eastern, 6 to 2 Pacific). For a full-time role I can match your shift.
